First of all, you should contact me to create an account.

Then open the terminal on a computer that is under the departmental subnetwork.

You cannot log in to the DREAM server from Internet or even CUHK Wi-Fi. We want to make sure the cyber security by hiding in the local network.

Login

Type the following command and enter your password when prompted. Just type yes when you are asked to confirm the figerprint.

ssh <user_name>@dream

and then you should see:

[user_name@dream ~]$

this means you successfully logged in to the DREAM server.

Set Up Your Account

After you log in, you should set up your account by changing the password.

passwd

and then you will be asked to enter your current password and then the new password.

Storage Space

Your home directory is located at /home/<user_name>. You can store your scripts, install your software and do your work there.

Your data directory is located at /data/people/<user_name>. Data directory is based on HDDs, your data is safe there.

You shouldn't store large amount of data in your home directory. It may interfere the server's performance and is not safe.

If your need to collaborate on a project or you need to archive the data on the server. You will ask the admin to create a project for you, and then you will have a project directory at /data/projects/<project_name>.

You will be responsible for your own data safety by controlling the access to your project directory or own directory. Please refer to the File Permission for more information.
